Track and Field
Track and Field practice begins on Wednesday, March 24, 2010.  First practice will be held at Special Olympics Office,  4326 Dale Blvd, Suite 1 from 7 PM until 8 PM.  It will be informational only
 

Basketball
Basketball starts on Wednesday, December 2, 2009, Woodbridge Middle School at 6:30 PM.  We offer training in skills, half-court and full-court teams.

   Young Athlete Program Minimize  

Young Athletes training day  will be held at Independent Hill on October 17 from 8:45-11:30. A parent must be present and actively involved.  Note that there is limited space, 20-25 participants. Call 703-497-2146 to reserve a space. Please download the Young Athlete Training Day flier below for more information.

 

There will be age appropriate  activities involving music, eye/hand coordination, balance and jumping skills, and interactive play through games.  We are really excited about this new program and hope to have a good turnout and a wonderful time with the children.

 

Please complete the Young Athlete Registration and Release form found on our web site at www.pwsova.org and click on “Be an athlete”.  Forms will also be available on the training day.

 

A medical examination is not required for Young Athlete participants and children with Down’s syndrome are not required to get a cervical spine X-ray prior to participating in Young Athlete activities.

   How to become an Athlete Minimize  

      If you or someone you know is at least  6 years old,  they may be eligible to participate in training programs with Special Olympics. Anyone who is at least eight year old can compete in a competition.  Each athlete must have a physical examination with health information recorded on the Special Olympics form.     Email us at:   I-want-to-be-an-athlete@pwsova.org  for more information.             

   Whether you are new to the program or a more seasoned athlete, before mailing the form to the office, please make sure the form is signed by a medical     professional (a person licensed in Virginia to complete  physical examinations).

  Call 703-680-6661 to request a registration package or download the form from the web site: www.specialolympicsva.org . Click on Be an Athlete then click on download under Registering an Athlete.

   Conduct Minimize  

Special Olympics is committed to the highest ideals of sport and expects all athletes unified partners act in a manner that both contributes to the overall mission of Special Olympics and follows Special Olympics Virginia policies.   All Special Olympics athletes and Unified Partners agree to the following code. A copy of the code may be downloaded for your convenience.

 

SPORTSMANSHIP

·        I will practice good sportsmanship.

·        I will act in ways that bring respect to me, my coaches, my team, and Special Olympics.

·        I will not use bad language at Special Olympics events,  training sessions or during competition.

·        I will not insult other persons at Special Olympics events, training sessions or during competition.

·        I will not fight with other athletes, coaches, volunteers, or staff.

 

 

TRAINING AND COMPETITION

·        I will train regularly and commit to knowing and playing by the rules of my sport.

·        I will listen to my coaches and the officials and ask questions when I do not understand.

·        I will always try my best during training, divisioning, and competitions. I will not “hold back” in preliminary competition just to get into an easier finals competition division.

 

RESPONSIBILITY FOR MY ACTIONS

 ·        I will not make inappropriate or unwanted physical, verbal, or sexual advances on others.

·        I will not take part in smoking or chewing tobacco at any training or competition site except in designated smoking areas.

·        I will not take part in the consumption of alcoholic beverages and/or controlled substances during any Special Olympics training or competition.

·        I will obey all laws and Special Olympics rules, the International Federation and the National Federation/Governing Body rules for my sport (s).

·        I will respect the property of hotels, dormitories, athletic facilities and dining facilities.
